iPhone "unknown part" message explained

After a screen, battery or camera repair, some iPhones show a parts message in Settings. Here's what it means.

What the message is

Newer iPhones check whether parts are genuine Apple parts. If a non-Apple screen, battery or camera is fitted, the phone can show a message such as "Unknown Part" or "Important Display Message" in Settings › General › About.

Does it affect the phone?

The phone works normally. With a non-Apple battery, the Battery Health percentage may not be shown. With a non-Apple screen, True Tone may need setting up again, and colour can look slightly different from the original.

Genuine or alternative parts

For many models we can offer a genuine Apple part or a more affordable high-quality alternative. Genuine parts avoid the message and keep the original display quality. We'll explain the difference and the prices before we start.

Our recommendation

If you plan to keep or sell the phone, a genuine part protects its value. If cost matters most, a quality alternative is a sensible choice. Either way, the repair comes with our 3-month warranty.

Quick answers

Will a non-genuine screen stop Face ID working?

No. Face ID isn't part of the screen, and we transfer the parts that need moving.

Can the message be removed?

Not with a non-Apple part. Choosing a genuine part avoids it.
